Selkies, from Irish Mythology, are the Celtic equivalent of mermaids. Seal folk who can shape-shift into human form by shedding their magical skin (or cloak). They are most commonly some, and they are irresistible to humans. in the many stories about Selkies, human men would fall in love with them and hide their magical cloaks – without which the Selkie woman is unable to turn back into a seal, and becomes trapped on land, in human form. In various stories, the Selkie finds her cloak and returns to her seal folk on the full moon.
