The final mural in the Irish mythology series for the Gaelscoil in Dublin. The school’s values of friendship, harmony, inclusion and acceptance are echoed here in the subject matter. For this mural, I worked with the pupils, exploring different tales from Irish mythology, and I asked the pupils to elect what characters they would like to see depicted in this final piece, and why. The outcome is a scene with a multitude of characters from different stories, interacting with each other in delightful and surprising ways.
Characters in this mural include: Benadonner (the giant attributed with creating the Giant’s Causeway) Oisín and the white horse from Tír na nÓg, the children of Lír and their father the King, an Irish wolfhound, Grainne Mhaol, St. Colmcille and the Lough Ness Monster, the Salmon of Knowledge, some hurling players, and finally Diarmuid and the wild boar.
As with the rest of the mural series, I have reinterpreted the stories in places, to reflect the school’s values mentioned above. For example – Diarmuid and the boar – in the story they fatally wound each other. However I have depicted them here as pals. Diarmuid was a well known poet, so I have depicted the boar, looking to see how the poetry is coming along. They are joined by a character from another story – a swan child of Lír – who is also curious to see how the writing is going.
Another example can be seen far left where a wolfhound and a rabbit form a novel pair of companions. In the central section Oisin and the White Horse mingle with a cat (Púca) and another swan. On the far right, Grainne Mhaol gives a friendly greeting as she arrives on her boat.
